Finding the Right Rug for Your Child's Room

If you're like me, you have a child whose room resembles the aftermath of a hurricane. Used to be I'd walk into my daughter's room I'm stepping over discarded dolls and stuffed animals, and pushing mounds of laundry aside just to get to the other end. Finally when I had the time to do some serious cleaning I realized something - there's actually a floor underneath all that mess! Now I could actually do something to enhance the decor of the little one's room, like lay down a rug.

When we think about structuring our children's rooms, we may initially put some thought into things like wall color and decor. It's not uncommon for parents to want to encourage a child's individuality, allowing them free rein to set up posters and wall decals. When it comes to a rug, however, you want to choose a pattern and color that suits your child's mood and interests. Also, you want it to possess other qualities.

Durability: Once you set down the rug, you can expect that it will become subject to wear almost immediately. The rug you select should be durable and manufactured to last. Look for quality craftsmanship, good stitching, and stain resistant materials.

Style: It's not uncommon for parents to proceed with caution when buying kids' furniture. Do you want to spend a lot of money on something your child will outgrow in a few years? Even if you're able to unload outdated pieces at a garage sale, you won't see a complete return on investment. Rugs may last longer than the crib or bed, but styles do change over time. Your teenage daughter may be embarrassed to have a rug designed with Sesame Street characters for example. You may instead wish to look at patterns and colors that don't typify a certain age, and will last a long while.

Price: You get what you pay for - this rings true with just about anything you need to buy. If you want a quality rug that doesn't unravel after the first year of heavy foot and toy traffic, don't feel baffled when that twenty-dollar department store job falls apart on the floor. Price is a consideration when you're on a budget, yes, but you shouldn't sacrifice quality for cost, or else you will spend more money buying a replacement rug.

To have all concerns about children's rugs answered, visit a rug showroom. Usually design experts are on hand to assist you in finding the right rug for your child's room. Once it's bought and installed, your kids may be more inclined to keep the room clean.
